Effect of gender and ABO blood groups on frequency of ABH antigens secretor status

Abstract
Background. ABH blood antigens, that determine ABO blood groups, are not only present on the RBCs surface but also present in the different body fluids such as tears, saliva. People who have these antigens in their body fluids are called secretors.
Aim. This study was conducted to compare the frequency of secretors and non-secretors among people with different gender and ABO blood groups.
Methods. Saliva samples (n = 100) were collected from students in Inaya Medical Colleges (IMC). ABO saliva secretor cases were determined using the conventional hemagglutination test (absorption-inhibition method).
Results. The number of secretors (n = 67, 50 females and 17 males) was higher than the non-secretor (n = 33, 18 females and 15 males) in saliva. The percentage of secretors was higher in females (67%) than males (33%). The frequencies of secretor status in different ABO blood groups were 72% in group A, 68 % in groups B and O, and 60% in group AB. Chi square results showed a significant (P≤ 0.05) association between gender and secretor frequency. However, there was no significant (P≥0.05) association between blood groups and secretor frequency.
Conclusion. A higher number of secretors was detected in females and students with blood group A. The frequency of secretors was significantly associated with gender rather than ABO blood groups.
