Pregnancy in renal transplanted mother: a successful multi-disciplinary approach

Abstract
Renal transplant patient undergoing pregnancy is challenging both for patients as well as for doctors. The quality of life improves for chronic kidney disease patients after renal transplant. It offers the hope of motherhood for women with chronic kidney disease. Post-renal transplant patients should be counseled before planning a pregnancy. It is important to counsel these patients regarding the risk it poses to the allograft as well as to the fetus. Factors to improve the outcome should be emphasized before conception. Here, we discuss a successful case history of a 30-year-old, post-renal transplant patient who had come to us for infertility management. She was taken through an uneventful pregnancy and delivery of a healthy baby at 36 weeks of gestation. The teamwork of obstetricians, nephrologists, and pediatricians is of utmost importance to achieve this. In this article, we have tried to discuss the safe use of various immunosuppressants and steroids. It is important for us to know their mechanism of action, side effects, toxicity levels, and effect upon the fetus.
